The San Diego Book Arts (SDBA) recently welcomed back Seth Apter for two two-day workshops in San Diego. I attended the first workshop, “Cover to Cover,” which was held September 16 & 17, 2015. This workshop was about using mixed-media techniques to create a one-of-a-kind, unconventional artist’s book. Using vintage book covers as the base, and making a series of double-sided “pages” filled edge to edge with grungy goodness. A variety of art mediums—paint, gesso, paste, spray, ink, and more—were combined to create layers of color, texture, and dimension. The approaches introduced could be applied to any surface and to a multitude of other projects. Including my new mixed-media boards!Honestly, had this workshop gone on for a week, it still wouldn’t have been enough for me… as the techniques we learned could be applied in so many interesting ways. I was so in my element that time simply FLEW by. I LOVED THIS WORKSHOP!
We learned additive and subtractive techniques, how to work with pastes, make textures, build backgrounds, and best of all… how to let go and let the piece inform what might come next… which is the theme of my life this year! If you ever have the opportunity to take a class from Seth, you simply must take it.
Truly glad that you were there to share this workshop experience with me Nancy. Thank you!!
