Layachi has been working with leather since he was a child. He started at around 9-years-old. He was probably fetching pelts and tea at that age, his hands too small to hold the tools, but no matter he is a MASTER craftsman now, and an amazingly nice guy.
While in Tetouan, Morocco in February-March 2016 at my Art Residency, I combined some of my printmaking with his work. I went to the medina and purchased several leather pelts and cut them up and printed on one, left one plain and then had some of my Gelli prints printed on Vinyl. Layachi did the rest.
The experience of working with a master was amazing, and letting go to see what he’d come up with was a big step for me, and a fun journey for him!
I would LOVE to go back and see what we could do if we had more time to experiment! What do you think of the results?
Nancy, I love it! I never got to see the finished bag because you picked it up right before you left. It’s beautiful!
Rachel Thank you! I love it so much I don;t use it… which is really silly! It’s so cool. I think I will start using the vinyl one!
Missing Tetouan!
Rachel Thank you. It was one of the highlights of my residency…
